Homework Blog #2

In recent news, a traffic stop may have prevented a school shooting at an Albuquerque school after A 15-year-old boy was pulled over on his way to Volcano Vista High School Tuesday morning.Turns out he had a gun hidden in the car and said he had plans to use it on some of his classmates. "It's just lucky we intervened when we did," said Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson, Officers Robert Gibbs.
An APD officer stopped the Cadillac the teen was driving near Rainbow and Paseo Del Norte." The young juvenile was not licensed to operate the vehicle," Gibbs said. "also the vehicle did not display a license plate and the vehicle was not currently registered as well." Police towed the car and gave the 15-year-old student a ride to school. A few hours later, police said he spontaneously admitted to authorities at school that there was a gun in his car when it was towed. Police searched the car and found a gun hidden under a floor board.

Investigators said the teen also admitted that when he was pulled over he was on his way to a friend's house to get bullets because he wanted to shoot three kids.
"Fellow students who had bullied him," Gibbs said. "or were picking on him."In a hand-written statement the teen gave police during questioning, he wrote "My intention was to go to school, find the kids and shoot them." Parents and students who spoke to News 13 on Thursday said they can only imagine the worst. "It's definitely is a concern, especially with the gun," parent Marty Dautenhahn said. "Obviously since columbine, it's definitely on parents minds." Student Ontario Oneka said he was shocked to hear about the teen's possible intentions. "A lot of kids go to school here and something could have happen," he said.

In an eerie statement to police, the teen said during questioning, if he had not been pulled over, he would be in jail by now. The teen is only facing traffic charges at this point. Officer Gibbs said it is to hard to prove intent because he never actually brought the gun to school. Police are still trying to figure out where the teen got the gun. APS officials would not comment on camera, but told News 13 the Volcano Vista student could be suspended or expelled. The boy is in Children Youth and Families Custody right now.

My question to you is: if there was a situtation like this at your school, would you feel safe being there? Do you feel that APS has provided you with a safe enough environment? Please answer in a short paragraph. Have a great weekend!

  1. I think that iam not safe and that APS should do something about it because if they don't they are going to have parents all over them

  3. I don't feel that safe at APS because of all the dangerous things that have happened in the past few years. I am really scared because I go to that school every school morning to catch the bus to go to ECA. One of my really close friends goes to that school too. I don't feel as safe as I would be if I was at a private or a Catholic school. I'm hoping APS will do something to help the students feel safer.

  4. If there was a situation like this at my school I wouldn't feel safe just knowing that people can be in serious danger. A person or student who has a gun is on a very bad mental state and can easily make a honest mistake. I also do not think APS has provided a safe enviroment if kids are willing ready to kill a fellow classmate. This student could have been bullied into where the situation got out of his hands where he felt like he needed to take care of the situation. If this was all it takes for a student to try to feel safe at school then APS isn't helping at all. Especially if this boy didn,t get stop he could have killed people, so APS need to put more protection on the school. School should feel like a safe place other then feeling unsafe.

  5. If I was in this situation I would not feel safe. Especially if a student was the shooter becuase how would we even know that person was gonna do it? In this instance they were lucky because they stopped him before he could do it. Where if not, no one would have known except the people planning it and now there would be three lives lost. I believe that APS is not providing a safe enviornment and needs to work harder at fixing that. I know danger is everywhere and not everything can be avoided but this does not count. If students don't feel safe at school how can they really consentrate on their work, test, ect.?

  6. no, I don't feel safe because, that could of happened in any school. In the school they never provide you safeness. I think they should have security guards at APS.

  7. Personally if I were in this situation, I'd probably be a little troubled but not completely unsafe. Students don't usually know how to properly use a gun so that would be the main thing worrying me, aside from potential murder. I'm glad that these cops did stop him when they did because it could have turned out extremely wrong. If it had been another school shooting I would have thought 'dear god I hope he's in counseling,' but not in this case. Seeing the school name gave me chills because, my cousin goes there and I would not want anything to happen to her. APS may think that they are providing safe enough protection but they are extremely mistaken! At my previous school, seeing lighters, drugs, brass knuckles, and knives pulled out in class or lunch was a regular occurrence. I only felt safe there because of my friends. APS needs more ways to ensure that students are safe or grades will slip tremendously.

  9. I think that APS is not providing a safe environment for students. At my old school there were many things that happend, everyone was pretty freaked out. There was going to be a shooting and everyone was calling there parents to go home it was really scary.I think that APS should have more protection at the schools so that no one gets hurt. It's a good thing they stopped it before anything happend, but that was just luck. There should be more security at school so that everyone can be safe.By: Angelica Espino 4th prd.

I fell that I'm safe at school to an extent, where at times students can have there out burtst's and want to go on a killing rampage. At my previous school's there were always security guards which were not more then just someone to talk to if we had problems. They would never really do anything about it. I don't feel that having a security guard or any other thing would protect us because if something is going to happen like that at a school, it's just going to happen.

APS does the best they can to keep students safe. Obviously, this is a lot harder at a gigantic school like Volcano Vista that it is at the ECA. I generally feel safe in school, like the rest of the world, it is mostly filled with people just going about their business.
The roots of this problem are in the mal-intentions of the students themselves, and I'm not talking about the kid with the gun. Don't get me wrong, what that kid was going to do is inexcusable and he should be punished, BUT if we as classmates push someone to that point, we share half of the blame.

I wouldn't know what to feel if this happened. It would be a huge shock that one kid had this intention and I wouldn't be surprised if another kid had this intention. I think APS has done a lot for campus security; cameras and security officers. I think they have done all they can for now. I mean they can't search us every day and send officers to follow us around.

  13. I think that at a big school like volcano vista it would be hard to find a problem with students, like a shooting, so i personally wouldnt feel safe at a big school like that. but ECA is a very safe school and i feel comfortable attending ECA

  14. I do feel safe because if you know that you have no problem with no one, why would you be scared that someone is going to do something bad to you?, but I think that APS doesn't provide enough security.

  15. In this situation I feel that APS handled it well. They actually believed him about the gun. It also made me think that if that were my school I wouldn't feel safe. It being a big school he could of had hurt a lot of people. Its also sad that bulling pushed them this far. I'm glad APS got to it quick, its hard to imagine what could of happened.

If a situation like this happend i wouldnt of feel safe because what if the kid didnt really shoot the three kids and in axcident he shot a nother kid he didnt want to hurt that wouldnt be safe for no one. At the this time i feel that APS has provided a safe environment but at the same time not really because there's alot of open doors any kind of krimanal can get in aat any time and some people cant even notice because evry one would of bin inside there class.

  17. I feel safe, to an extent, there's never knowint that another student could have a mental breakdown and just come to school with a gun and start shooting people, but I do think that they should put more security in schools like Manzano
