New Mexico's largest city will receive $500,000 in federal money for a project using landfill gas to provide energy. The grant will fund a system that converts methane gas from Albuquerque's Cerro Colorado landfill into energy. The gas-to-energy system will collect the methane generated by decomposing landfill materials.
First, the project will use the gas to fire a new kiln at a glass recycling facility.
Then the program will pipe the gas to Bernalillo County's detention facility to fire heating and hot water boilers. The grant was announced by U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall.Funds come through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Showcase Communities initiative, designed to help cities increase energy efficiency, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

I think that Albuquerque deserves this grant because being nearly a desert state ourselves, we have limited vegetation. This could be a good way for New Mexico to continue leading as a GREEN flagship state, because our environment may not have as much greenery as other states, but at least this grant for us is something that is a CHANGE. It's a good thing to use energy much more efficiency and to save money while helping our environment.

I don't think this is a very good idea. The country is in a financial problem right now getting $500,000 in FEDERAL money is over doing it a bit. I'm glad to hear that New Mexico is going green, but the country could really use that money for other things.
ReplyDeleteI think that the country can use the money for something else besides this project. Albuquerque can do other things to go green besides this. For example, they could start up recycling in every public school. I do think that New Mexico should keep trying to go green just maybe with something that doesn't involve that much federal money.

I’m glad that we are getting this money. I know that money is pretty tight right now, but if you think about the long run, we would definitely benefit from this grant. I would be even happier knowing that New Mexico is becoming greener. New Mexico would be setting a good example for the rest of the country. Right now people won’t be happy about how much money we are getting for this project, but in the future we would be saving money and they just might change their opinion.

I think that its good that Albuquerque got to do this project because its helping the environment and its also helping us save money and that's good.I also think that its going to take forever to this projet to be comleted and we could also use that money for something else too but i think that its good what they are doing.

Yeah it is a good idea. But New Mexico is pretty tight on money right now they should use the money for something that really needs it.Plus yeah its an idea but they are not posotive it will work so they should use the money on something that they are posotive will work.And yes it is swome w2hat a good way for us to stay green. The reason i say this is because knowing that New Mexico is going green makes me feel like we're actually doing something good in this world. Even though doing this is going to cost a lot of money but i say it is worth it.

In my opinion its good that their going green, but they could use the money on something else. Its a big city like they said, and theres other things that they need to work on for now. Where the energy is going is also important. They said that there gonna use it for heating the bernallio detentioin facility, I think thats good so that they dont have to use tax money.

I think that Albuquerque getting this grant is awesome. Anyway that we can save the planet is great, plus saving money on energy when its all done will make it worthwhile in the end. Also when you think about it, this project can give people jobs for the construction and keeping it running when its complete. I do think that this is good for NM to continue leading the country as a green flagship state. We can show everyone that it is possible to save the world.

i think that it was good of the state to give albuquerque ther grant, it not only makes the planet greener but creatates energy that this growning city needs.It does help to keep New mexico as the greenest stae in the U.S we need to set an exsample for the rest of the country. If we can sorvive being green then so can everybody else.

I think that Albuquerque should of helped out a litle more, but because a city doesn't have to the power to make everyone help out i think they did pretty good so i think that we DO deserve the money.
ReplyDeleteI dont think its a very good idea because getting $500,000 dollars is alot of money for new mexico to spend on going green. Its a good thing that new mexico wants to go green but it can cause alot of financial complications for a city like albuquerque thats already having financial complications. If new mexico can find a way to go green and not cause complications maybe it can be a good idea.

It would be a good benefit for Albuquerque to use alternative energy source like menthane to avoid the negatives of gas; meanwhile saving money for other utilities. Hopefully, the project will not be a wasted fund, but there is no assurance of it unless we act it out. After all, new reliable sources of energy is one of the most important problems that we're facing, since gas can only last so long.
