In recent news, The University of New Mexico filed an appeal last month against the city of Albuquerque after councilors voted last fall to deny the school a wavier to sell alcohol at sporting events and in the student union. "UNM's strategy in this appeal is somewhat bizarre," City Attorney Rob Perry said.
Court documents show that UNM is arguing that the city has no jurisdiction over the university, and that only the state has the power to enforce or waive liquor licenses. Perry said the state's alcohol and gaming division actually referred UNM's request to the city. "If there is a problem it's between one state agency, the University of New Mexico, and it's between the other state agency, the state alcohol and gaming division. We just did what we were asked to do," Perry said.
Albuquerque City Council President Don Harris echoes the city's argument. "So if the state of New Mexico doesn't think we have jurisdiction, they chose a funny way of expressing that," Harris said.
Last fall, UNM applied for a waiver to sell alcohol in the suites at The Pit, University Stadium and for special events in the student union building. In November, the city council denied it. The university refused to comment on the appeal.
According to the city, the state legislature allows cities to make decisions on liquor licenses in some cases.
What do you think about UNM aquiring a liquor license? Do you think the PIT should be able to serve alcohol? What do you think the positive and negative outcomes are? Please comment in a short paragraph.

ReplyDeleteI think that it would be a bad idea to allow UNM a liquor license because there would be an even larger increase in alcoholics among college students. I think that it would be okay to allow the PIT to sell alcohol, but not anywhere else. the positive outcomes would be, there would be more parties and fun at games. The negative outcomes would be a larger increase in alcoholics around the college students and the school grade average would drop. Thank you for reading.
I think that it would not be a very good idea to allow UNM to have an alcohol license because there would be an increase in alcoholic students. I don't think that alcohol should be sold at any sporting event or any event at UNM or any college because as i said before there would be a massive increase in alcoholics among the students at UNM, it would also make it easier for the UNM students that are under the legal drinking age to obtain alcohol. I belive that there are no positive outcomes from anybody drinking alcohol. the bad outcome include under age drinking and more problem drinking students, Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI think that the University of New Mexico should NOT be allowed to serve alchohol on any basis because it incourages students to drink, even if they are of legal age. It completely goes against what teachers and schools are trying to teach us now, which is of course, not to drink.
ReplyDeleteI think that UNM should not serve alcohol on campus. This is because that studies have shown that alcohol can kill brain cells, so why would you want to do that. It would not help you to graduate and it is easier for those that are not of legal age to drink to obtain alcohol. The only positive outcome of this would be that some people would be happy to drink at a social event or just to drink in general. So all in all, it's just a horrible idea to let them sell alcohol.

ReplyDeleteI think that UNM should be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages as long as it obtains its liquor license and sells the alcohol to people of legal age. I do not think that simply selling it would encourage students to drink, and I do not think that it would cause more alcoholism or drinking on campus. For students who already drink and are of legal age, it would just make alcoholic beverages more easily available to them. Also, I think that UNM has the same legal rights to sell alcohol as any other buisinesses. Also, despite peoples objections to alcohol, a person over 21 has every legal right to buy alcohol and a business with the appropriate licenses has every right to sell alcohol to people over 21, and peoples objections shouldn't interfere with those rights, since it is unconstitutional.
As long as UNM is not selling the alcohol to students who are under the legal age, I think It should be fine to sell alcohol at the PIT. I do not think that alcohol should be sold on campus however, because there should not be alcohol available to the UNM staff, or students who are legally able to drink, while they at the school. Positive outcomes of selling alcohol at the PIT would be lots of income for the school, and the negative outcomes would be the possibility of people becoming drunk while at the PIT.

ReplyDeleteI think that UNM shouldn't be allowed to obtain a liquor lisence because it would first of all be another opportunity for students to drink which most college students do too often especially those students that are underage. it would also no longer be a family friendly environment because of people there that are intoxicated causing it to be a potentially dangerous place to take your children. We should be trying to teach students and children the dangers if drinking not give them another opportunity to drink. And eventually they could start selling alcohol on campus which would be a terrible idea.
ReplyDeleteI believe that unm should be able to have a liquor license as long as it's served to people above the legal age limit. I also think that the pit should be able to serve alcohol to people. A reason being the large sum of money coming in from people who like to drink alcohol. The positive effect of this would be the large income of money coming in from people who like to consume the beverage. The negative effect of this would be the higher risk of people being intoxicated including students and people out of the
ReplyDeleteSchool.
I bieleve it would be wrong for the pit to sell alcohol. I think the positive outcomes to this would be a healthier and responsible enviroment for those younger in age not able to drink (meaning they shouldn't do it anyway). It will give them the Idea to not want to drink. the negitive outcome to this, if there really is one would be a rage of those who love to drink demanding that they allow alcohol at UNM. If we allow the selling of alcohol it would increase the number of DWI's not only in the city but the state. I say do not allow it.
ReplyDeletePersonally i don't think its that much of a horrible idea to sell liquor at the school as long as they either have hours or some sort of limit. The majority of students are old enough to buy their own liquor in the first place. By not allowing them to sell at events can lower profits and the school may not be able to do as many things as they would when they do have that extra bit of money. I do think that they should allow them to sell at events with some form of limitation. As long as there are some responsible people to keep track of what is going on with the sales there should not be a problem.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the university should be allowed to serve alcohol on it's property as long as the distribution is well regulated to prevent the occurrence of underage drinking. The location of the distributor should not matter as long as the substances are out of the hands of minors.
ReplyDeleteI think that they should be able to sell alcoholic beverages at the stadium and the pit because most colleges do sell alcoholic beverages at football games and basketball games, so i really don't see a problem. If other colleges are doing it and not having any major problems, then why would UNM? Plus it can raise profits at games that can be used for supplies and books and whatnot. So, i believe that UNM should be aloud to sell alcoholic beverages at their sporting events.
ReplyDeleteI think that UNM should be able to sell alcoholic beverages at sporting events as long as there is some kind of regulation to prevent minors from obtaining alcohol. As long as it is sold with discretion I see no issue in serving alcohol at UNM sporting events.
