In recent news, both candidates for governor have promised they will not raise taxes as they campaign across the state. Republican Susana Martinez was campaigning in Roswell Thursday with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. She cranked up her promise of no tax hikes from one year to all four years of a governor's term. Democrat Diane Denish says she doesn't see any tax hikes she would support over the next several years.
Both candidates have also promised not to cut state spending on public schools and Medicaid—60 percent of the budget. Money-minded state lawmakers say all those promises mean very deep cuts across the rest of state government as the state continues to see tax revenues plunging in the recession.
What do you think about these candidates promising "No new Taxes?" Do you think that this is a good idea? Do you think whomever wins will hold true to their statement?

It depends really. I mean, having no new taxes has a different impact to everyone. To us citizens, it's positive news; we don't have to pay more than we already do. Meanwhile, it also means that the government will be suffering while the economy is on it's way plummeting downwards. It's a good idea, IF whoever wins will actually hold true to their statement. It doesn't seem very likely, because in arguments, everyone wants to look convincing, but is what they say really what they mean?

No new taxes sounds good for the citizens, but the government could really suffer because of it. I don't really think that they will hold true to their statements.

Taxes may be a bad or good thing depending on the situation in our country. Even if citizens prefer not have it, taxes is a way for the government to pay for national defenses (i.e. army, navy, air force), national highway system, the legislator, senators, president, Sandia Labs, maintaining our health, etc... There are local and public taxes in Albuquerque to maintain our environment and other things. Not a lot of people are aware that taxes don't just benefit the government, it also benefits us. But all of this is dependent on how people are using taxes, like if their taking advantages of it or not and whether how much taxes is too much. Even if there needs to be extra funds, the government should be weary of overdoing it and causing another Tea Party Movement. I don't believe there is a real guarantee that any on of them will hold up their promise.

I believe that the candidates hearts are in the right place when they say that there will be no new taxes. They are trying to please the people that their trying to win over but I don't think that it is a very good idea to campaign this. Because it's not very likely that either of the candidates will hold true to this promise. They might try their best at the begining of their terms to live without raising taxes, but at some point or another they will have to raise some taxes to keep the state running smoothly.

I think that everyone is really happy that the candidates are promising not to raise taxes. But, honestly if they raise them or if they don’t someone won’t be happy. Not raising taxes means budget cuts on everything else. Raising taxes means people need to pay more out of pocket, and people are already having trouble as is. The economy is really bad so either way New Mexico will have a hard time. The candidates are looking good now, but will they keep their promise? I’m not so sure about this.

No new taxes is a hard promise to withhold and I'm not sure these women can keep their promises. I don't really think that this is such a good idea. With the econemy the way it is no one can really promise that they won't raise taxes, especially if something important later on comes up. To be perfectly honest I don't really know if they will keep their promises in up coming years. Plus people will say anything to get another vote.

Well i think that "No new taxes" is a good idea because we New Mexicans won't have to pay other taxes. I dont think we need to pay more then what we already pay. I say that there is a posability that whoever wins will keep their word about "No new taxes" but theres only a 50/50 chance because not everyone keeps their word, especcialy when it comes to government. They usually just say things that they know are going to make people happy just so they can win. But you never know maybe they are being honest.

I think that the know new taxes idea is a good and a bad thing. It is a good thing to all of us the people who have to pay the taxes but it can be a bad thing for our economy. It will make the economy worse than it already is. I also thing that the governers will stay true to the "no new taxes" and just forget about that idea. but i think that taxes help out the economy by not letting the economy totally crash.

It depends entirely whether or not our economy needs the money from the taxes or not. I believe that the candidates may hold true to their word, for a few months. I don't believe that they will continue through with their words all 4 elective years or even just 1. Most tend to say these things just to get into office, then follow through for a while so people will like them. Then they will just stop and not finish what they promised, although some do.

In my opinion its impossible to be tax free for a period of four years. There not going to keep to their promise for long. I dont think that them promising no taxes is good, where there is absolutely no money coming in they have to make up for it somewhere else. Each canidte has totaly different views, and hopefully they at least try to stay true to their word.

I really don't know enough about either of their policies to really say if they will stay true to their 'no tax hikes' statements. However, I do know that Martinez has resorted to taking some ugly stabs at Denish... candidates should stick to the facts and not lower themselves to bringing down others.
ReplyDeleteThere are two different sides to the "No New Taxes" promise. Citizens like it because they don't have to pay anything but it's not good for the present economy we're living in. I guess we'll just have to see if whoever gets voted in can keep their word. I highly doubt that either one of them would keep their word once voted into office.
ReplyDeleteI think that everything the governors are saying its a lie, because all the time when people began to vote they'll say they'll do this and that and all nice, but when are governors already they don't do anything about what they say. it's hard to believe everything they say they'll do.
