ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- This year, the state fair is closed Mondays and Tuesdays to save money during the state's budget crunch, but some vendors aren't too happy about it. Roy Messenger has been selling wands and princess hats at the fair for more than 15 years. He thinks the grounds should have only been closed on Mondays. "Being closed both days, you kind of lose out on a lot of money," said Messenger. But state fair staff said they had to cut the fair's costs, along with every other state agency.
Fair officials said they considered raising ticket prices and vendor fees but decided on closing Mondays and Tuesdays. Michael Henningsen with the New Mexico State Fair said most vendors didn't mind. "Some said it wasn't even worth their time to open on those days, so we thought by doing that, we would save them some overhead, but also save ourselves overhead," said Henningsen. On a normal fair day, about 1,200 people are working at the fairgrounds. When the gates are shut, less than 50 people are needed, officials said. The state fair is also running a $2 admission this Wednesday. Henningsen said the fair may take a hit at the front gate, but it's made up elsewhere.
Fair officials say they haven't tallied any attendance numbers or profit figures yet. They said they'll have to wait to see if the changes will help them stay on budget and boost numbers.
Do you think that closing on Mondays and Tuesdays is a good idea? Do you think that the fair goers would still attend, even if prices went up?

I think that it is good because still if they close both days people are going to want to go more because it is just here for two weeks so they are going to have more people and if they would just close on Mondays priced would go up and not that many people would go because of the economy its still really bad and they would have to pay more for there stands

I do think that closing Monday and Tuesday is a good idea because even though those days close, people will still want to go. I don't think that they will loose much money because of how expensive everything already is. I do think that the people will still attend because it's such a fun event that everybody can enjoy.

I don't think closing the fair on Monday and Tuesday is such a good idea. I say this because well some people may not have weekends or are busy doing the week, there only free time can be those days. It may bring money to the fair since people still want to go and would try to go doing those days so as to not miss out. Still others don't have a chance to go because some people come from other cities and it's hard to fit the fair in their schedule. So they lose people because it is closed. I also think having it open doing the whole week would bring them more profit because a lot of people go there and with it open all week they can go anytime, and possibly more than twice. The state fair is only here two weeks wouldn't you want enough days for more people to come? I don't think vendors should higher the price because people already spend enough there, spending more than they can afford would make things a lot harder. If things are to out of price range then people won't by it and the vendors won't get any money. -Cheyenne Chavez, 3rd Period
ReplyDeleteI think that closing the fair on Monday and Tuesday is a good idea. If it was between closing the fair for two days or raisning prices, I go for closing the fair for two days. Two days isn't that much of a difference esecially on mondays and tuesdays where people have work and school. I honestly think that if they lowered prices more people would go. Some won't even go to the fair this year because prices are so rediculously high. So I don't think that if the venders raised prices people would go. Also people would probably buy even more stuff if things were cheaper, just because they can.

i think that its a good idea that its closed Mondays and Tuesdays because people are still going to attend no matter what day of the week it is.

I think it is probably a good idea to close the fair on Mondays and Tuesdays since most of the visitors there are kids. And those kids are students who are busy with school. If they don't have to keep the fair opened on days when there aren't as many people around, then they don't have to waste so much money.
ReplyDeleteAs for the increased price, less people might go to the fair, but not by much. The majority of those people will likely be made up of middle schoolers and younger.

I think that it is a good idea to be closed on both Monday and Tuesday. Everyone loves the fair and an extra day off isn’t going to stop someone from going. Even people from out of state come to visit to go to the fair. If the fair was only closed on Mondays the prices would go up and people might not attend as much. I personally think that the fair is expensive enough as is. Raising the prices would just make it even more costly. The vendors also shouldn’t raise their price. Either way people will still attend the state fair. Plus, the vendors will continue to make profit.

I don't think that having the fair open on Monday and Tuesday's is going to stay that way for next year, but its also good for new mexico because we are saving money by not having to pay the vendors for coming. Although i still think that it's not a good idea because some people work through the weekends and have Monday and Tuesday off. That's how one of my aunt's schedule is and my family feels bad for her kid's because they cant go so my mom and i are having to take them.
ReplyDeleteI think that its a good idea that the state fair is closed on mondays and tuesdays because not a lot of people go on weekdays because they have to work or they have to go to school the following day. So the state fair doesn't waste as much money doing that. Also either way a lot of people are still gonna go the other days that are open because the fair is a very fun event in Albuquerque.

I think that it's a good idea that they close the fair on mondays and tuesdays. Most people have to work on those days and don't go to the fair. I also think that raising the prices is a bad idea because the fair is already really expensive. If they raised the prices some people wouldn't go.

I believe that closing the fair on mondays and tuesdays is a smart move. If I had to choose between closing the fair for a couple of days that people have to work or go to school on anyways and raising the price I would choose closing the fair. Like I said many people have things to do on those days and it won't be much of a loss. But I also believe that if they decided to raise the price instead they would lose some of their customers because people are struggling these days with money and many of them wouldn't be able to go to the fair for the raised price.

I think its a good idea if they close mondays and tusdays because people is still going to go. But rising the prices, i think its a bad idea. They should keep the prices just as they are because if they rice prices people are going to think its too much, close two days and the prices higher. i thik its too much. Just close it the two days i think its good.

I think it is a good idea because most people go on the weekends anyways. I doubt they'll lose that much money. Even if they have to raise the already ridiculously high prices, people will still go because it's a event that only happens once a year and people love going to the State Fair.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that closing the state fair on monday's and tuesdays is such a good idea because it wont save them that much money they will lose money on those days and gain money by how expensive everything is. If the cost went up i think that some people might not go because everything is already so expensive and people might not want to spend money so much money at the fair.

I think that it was a smart move and then again it wasn't
ReplyDeleteIt was Smart because:
Most people are at work or at school so all the electricity and other costs were making them lose money on those days
It was unsmart: Because it won't save them THAT much money. if they just raised everything for a dollar it would be more profitable.

In my opinion I think that its good that there doing this. If it saves the people and vendors money its good for both of them. It wont really affect hem much because nobody goes on mondays and Tuesdays.
