Homework Blog #3

In recent news, the Super Bowl is set for February 6th. People across the US are organizing Super Bowl parties, buying big screen TVs, and purchasing their favorite teams attire. With that said, the Super Bowl is a huge money maker. Not just for the players, coaches, and team owners but also for the television companies. Television companies like CBS use the Super Bowl a great source of economic profit. Companies like Coca Cola, Budweiser, and GoDaddy are forking over the big bucks to have a 30 second time slot in the broadcast. One might ask "How much does this 30 second slot cost?" It's reported that a commercial on CBS costs somewhere between $2.5 and $2.8 million! My question to you is, do you believe that this is a really affective advertising campaign? Do you think that these companies should be spending this amount of money during a time of economic crisis? Please answer in a short paragraph.

  1. I think it is definitely a great advertising campaign. The commercials make the product look so great and it makes the people CRAVE it! They make a bundle! I think that if they have the money to do these commercials I say "Hey, let them do what they want with their money." They are just trying to make money just like everyone else. No matter how bad the economy is everyone will try even more to make the money.

  2. I think its a great way to campaign, because look how many people are watching. Some people out there like my aunt enjoy the commercials more than the actual game. If they money for it let them do it, and they make money off of them too in the long run.

  3. Although it is an odd concept to "spend money to make money" it is what the companies are
doing when they air their commercials during the game. They pay so much to have their commercials play during this time because it is gaurented that millions of people will watch them. Because of this, it is worth it to spend the amount of money they spend bacause they will some way or another, make even more money.People stay to watch these commercials because companies make them funny, and this means people dont want to miss them.

  4. This is one of the best times of the year to advertise because millions of people will be watching tv. If they can make people buy their products then it is good for them. Although there are many other helpful ways to spend their money, such as helping the people in Haiti, they can do what they want with their own money. They just need to remember that the economy is suffering right now and not everyone is going to be able to buy their products or even be able to watch the game. Some people have to work today.

  5. This is a very important day for everybody because when companies advertise there product during superbowl then that means that people will probably go out and by that for them and there guests. To pay that much money for only 30 seconds is to much those companies could be buying something way better to help out there compane or help out people who need help.Right now people dont have money to bye there product and it is also exspensive to watch the game if you dont have cable. Alot of people have to work today so that half wont even bye there product they are advertising.

  6. I think that advertising around the time of the Super Bowl is definitely an effective way to get your product to be recognized, though since we are in the middle of an economic crisis it probably isn't the smartest move. The cost of just one commercial is way to high to be realistic and that money could benefit something that would actually help the country and not just the advertising companies and products.

  7. Advertisement during the Super Bowl is definitely an effective way to get consumers to recognize a certain company’s product. The advertisements are also very interesting and funny to watch. The companies who pay for these rare time slots have to realize that just because consumers know the product doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to buy it. The Super Bowl is a big deal and almost every American is going to watch it. CBS has to make advertisements that really make an influence on the viewers. Therefore, they need people willing to give up big bucks to get their product known. The harsh fact is that money makes the world go round. Advertisements usually make a drastic effect on the people who watch them and how it is portrayed takes the risks of consumers buying or sneering at the product. It is totally up to the companies if they want to pay that much money for thirty seconds of fame. It’s no difference to me if the product sells or not. If the company has got the money they might as well spend it on something beneficial.

  8. I think that it is crazy to spend that much money for a 30 second commercial BUT those commericals get all that money back. By the millions of people that are watching the super bowl. It is a way for products to get recognized and it's like there "bribing" people in a way which makes them want to buy that item. Hint hint, more money for the company.

  9. Well, I know that, no matter how bad the economic crisis, companies will always spend millions of dollars on ad campaigns. In fact, advertising will probably always be very close to the top of the spending list because it's the only way for them to gain revenue; so, in a time of crisis such as now, they will keep spending a lot of money so that their company will survive. Is spending *that much* money a smart idea? Perhaps not. But, since it is the Superbowl, millions of people will probably be watching and seeing all the ads that people put out. And, if 2.8 million people go out and buy $1.01 worth of their product, then their ad would have paid for itself. I think it's smart, business-wise and profit-wise; I don't think, however, that it's a good idea in terms of overall human benefit. They could be spending that money on hiring more people or paying their employees more, donating to various charities that would directly help people, and in that way would actually help people and the whole economy. Not just their pockets and top executives.
