Homework Blog #1

In recent news, Bernalillo County Residents were asked to vote on a very interesting issue. The issue.....turning Albuquerque's South Valley into a separate city. This city would be called Valle De Atrisco. Residents voted on January 5th 2010. With all 44 precincts counted, unofficial results of Tuesday's election showed more than 93 percent of the voters rejected the idea of a new Bernalillo County community called Valle de Atrisco. Supporters argued that a separate community would give the area more control over its future. Opponents questioned how much revenue a new community could raise toward the cost of operating government services.
Valle de Atrisco would have been New Mexico's fifth-largest city, with a population of about 53,000. My question to you is: What do you think should have happened with this issue? Should we have created a new community? Or would this really affect people in the south valley in a major way? Please answer in a short paragraph.

  1. I think that they should leave the south valley a part of albuquerque because they have no real reason to make it its own city. It was right to keep it a part of albuquerque because they obviously said them selves they arent stable enough to do that or have the money for it. This would have affected the south valley in a major way because more than likely the new city would have been owed money and it wouldnt really be an organized community.

  2. The South Valley should still be a part of Albuquerque because the South Valley cannot handle all of the responsibilities that come with it. Although the South Valley would have its own control, there was little reason to support the idea. The biggest issue in becoming a city would be increased taxes which is how this would have affected the South Valley in a major way. The right thing happened when the voters decided to keep the South Valley because there was really no reason to vote yes. Becoming a city would increase any problems that the South Valley might already have. The issue really had no reason for taking a vote because of course people were going to vote no.

  3. I think creating a new community would have been a bad idea. This is because the South Valley would not have the funding to make and maintain a fire department and other safety services, making the South Valley more prone to having problems along the road. Also at this point Bernalillo County is caring for the parks in the South Valley, so if it were to become its own city, people could have lost their jobs with county leaving them out of work. I don't really see why some people had wanted incorporation for the South Valley, especially since it seems it would only make it struggle to maintain already present services.

  4. I think that they should just leave the South Valley as a part of Albuquerque because it would cause too many money issues. We could use that money for something more important like fixing the city of Albuquerque, such as the streets or something else.

  5. I think they should leave the South Valley as a part of Albuquerque because if it were to become seperate it would cause money problems and we dont need any more of those. Also it would take a while for the county to get established so huge problems could happen in that amount of time.

  6. I think that the South Valley shouldn't become its own city because a majority of the people who voted voted against it. If we are trying to look at the options in a way that would allow the majority of the population to benefit, then making the South Valley into its own city wouldn't be the answer.

  7. I think that the South Valley should become a new community. With the county split up a little more it makes the other communities seem smaller that way it brings more people to buy houses making more profit. Tourists like smaller places to live because it seems more safe to them. Even though the county didn't get smaller it just makes it seem that way.

  8. I think that the South Valley should not become its own city and to stay a part of Albuquerque. Even though ‘Valle de Atrisco’ would be the fifth largest city in New Mexico, I believe that the South Valley does not have enough businesses to sustain itself if it were to become its own city. If that were to happen, taxes would have to be raised and frankly, no one wants that to happen. It seems like the idea to turn the South Valley into its’ own city is based on selfishness. People want to reach their goals and have more control over their homeland instead of thinking of the people and how this would affect them.

  9. I think that they should of left tyhe souh valley part of Albuqurqe because if they mak it seperate then it will start to cause more problems ith money and other community problems. It would effect people because all the money they will probably use to fix all th streets there and bildings when they could by food and more important stuff people need.

  10. I personally think that they should keep South Valley apart of Albuquerque. The reason for that is because there would be alot of problems with the people living there. If they didn't keep South Valley apart of Albuquerque then there would be money problems, therefore they would have no money for schools, safety services and hospitals. There would be alot of problems and it would be better if they just keep South Valley apart of Albuquerque.

  11. I think the South Valley should not have become a separate city. I agree that it may have caused problems with funding government activities. Also, i do not consider it separate in any way from ABQ right now, and therefore that area doesn't really need to have more control over its future. Lastly, wouldn't it be strange to be driving down, say, 4th street and suddenly be in a different city?
